Cam + Elephant Trunk = Captivating Images

20080326-elephant-cam.jpgIt’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves in private at one time or another: “What happens when you attach a camera to an elephant’s trunk and send it out into the wilderness?”

From the Daily Mail, a man by the name of John Downer did just that–with surprisingly candid results.I’m more surprised at the variety of animals that dared come near (out of curiousity, more than anything) the gargantuan outgrowth of the elephant’s trunk.

A Point of Note on: Accessing cameras

If you can’t seem to access some of these cams, be sure to try again later! Many of them tend to have limits on the number of people that can view them at one time, so it’s worth keeping our RSS feed in your reader so you can come back later and check on locations you couldn’t see earlier in the day.

Sakyo-Ku, Kyoto, Japan: A little old-time religion

Kyoto, Japan Japanese history has it that that the Yuki Jinja Shrine, located near Kyoto, Japan, used to keep bad spirits from harming Heian-kyo–now known as Kyoto–in the mid-10th century.

This view, from just outside of the walk to the shrine itself, provides a serene view where many people come daily to visit. Check out their website while you’re at it. You may not be able to read Japanese, but the many photos–including the annual torch-bearing ceremony held every October 22nd to commemorate the relocation of Yuki’s deity–are captivating and worth your time to explore.

Bry-Sur-Marne, France: Watch history come back to life

Bry-Sur Marne, France If art’s your kind of thing, this is the cam for you. Involving the restoration of Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre’s diorama in the Church of  Bry-Sur-Marne, France, this is one of the more intriguing cams I’ve ever come across.

In case you were wondering, it is the same guy that helped refine the process of what would become the Daguerrotype. You know, one of the very foundations that photography burst forth from. That fact alone gives this cam two thumbs up in the “must see” department.

Learn more about the diorama over here.

Stockport, England: Teach your children where bacon comes from

Stockport, England It’s a UK double-decker today, with our next (tasty) cam coming from the fine folks at Reddish Vale Farm, a school farm in Stockport, Cheshire, England.

Frankly, I can’t look at this one for more than a minute without feeling like having a very late breakfast (or very early, depending on your viewpoint), so I’m just going to have to cut this one a bit short. By now, you probably get the gist.

London, England: Just another (rainy) day

London, England London. Rain. Fog. Nothing entirely out of the ordinary here, but boy, is it difficult to find a good London Cam these days–especially one with such a decent view. Thanks to the fine folks at Elizabeth House at P&O Estates, you’ll be treated to what amounts to a nearly 360-degree view of London from their vantage point through their two cameras; one faces east, while the other faces predictably west.

Well worth both the views.

Orlando, Florida: I can haz 15 secund of fame?

Orlando, Florida What have I wrought upon myself with that sad excuse of a title? Ah, yeah, I’m just taking advantage of a rapidly tiring Internet meme.

Out of Orlando, Florida, we have ourselves the closest thing to a LOLCat joke as you’re going to get on the cam scene. Marcus Sharpe’s got himself not one, but two cameras; one of which is focused, if you haven’t guessed by now, directly on his cats’ sleeping quarters. (The other runs part-time during the day, focusing outside.)

If you’re looking for a potential LOLCat in action, here’s where you want to go.

Taipei, Taiwan: Flowers everywhere

20080306-taipei-taiwan.jpg Here’s a cam for the ladies, and a reminder to all the men that flowers are a gift that never seems to go out of style anytime of the year. Yes, I realize we’re running about three weeks late here, but this was one of those cams that deserves an entry even if we’re long past Valentine’s Day.

Less shilling for the floral industry and more cam, though. Gotta stay on topic.

Here’s an FTD florist way out in Taipei, Taiwan, managed by a guy who seems to know what being a florist is all about. I made a pretty good attempt to try and locate the specific location of the ‘Royal Flower’ florist through FTD’s site, but Taiwan, strangely enough, isn’t included on the list of countries we Americans can send to. I’m sure there are reasons for that, but while I’m pondering these geopolitical issues, give their cam a visit.

Huntington, West Virginia: They built this LegoCity on rock and roll

20080305-huntington-westvirginia.jpg As a good friend of mine from West Virginia once said, “It isn’t all that bad…” Except now that I have proof that there is, in fact, a part of West Virginia that proves him right: Marshall University’s LegoCity cam. Not only can you sit idly by and watch the various parts of the Lego empire swing and fly past the camera, you can actually operate parts of it yourself.

You might be 32 years old, and you might just be sitting at work, but you have no excuse not to check it out at some point today unless your heart could be symbolized by a lump of coal.

Krasnoyarsk, Russia: Fight for control

20080305-krasnoyarsk-russia.jpgWhen you find an interesting toy, the first thing you want to do is to play with it–even if it is an expensive $1,800 Axis 231D dome camera. Halfway around the world in the city of Krasnoyarsk, Russia, there is such a toy and you, too, can enjoy the thrills of fighting against your fellow brethren for the camera’s pan-tilt-zoom functions. Give in to the control freak within and check it out. You owe it to yourself, don’t you?

As an added bonus, check out the various signs in the area, such as the political ad to the left.
